Beth Pendery Story

By Beth Pendery

After Lionel was 90, there continued to be so many funny moments at Watch point! One time Debbie and Lionel arrived for a sleepover at Watch Point north. They stayed in the bedroom downstairs. It was a very cold night. When I came down in the morning Lionel was all dressed and curled up with a blanket. He had slept with his clothes on because they didn’t bring warm enough covers. Debbie and I found the one slice of sun on the path to the boathouse and sat there to drink our coffee!

When I turned 60 in 2011, we rented Watch Point South. Hurricane Irene decreased the number of attendees. Before we arrived, Lionel said he had to borrow the generator from Watch Point since they were renting their house on the lake and the tenants had no electricity. When he returned the generator to us, David and Lionel lugged the heavy generator off the boat and on to the dock. Then they bumped it up the path into place. We all sat down in the Adirondack chairs and we asked him who had helped him to get the generator. His response, “Oh I did it myself. I hooked up some ropes so I could hoist it up using the boat house, swinging the generator and then descending the generator into the middle of the boat.”  Always the engineer solving problems which amazed us with a twinkle in his eye while relaying a tale.

What a guy! My sister and I are so fortunate that he treated us as his daughters. We’ll miss you Lionel but your spirit of adventure will live on in all of us! Glad to have had you in my life for over almost 70 years!
